Though similar in motif to a rug design also in The Courtauld Gallery's collection (D.1958.PD.28), this pattern was evidently designed for a continuous surface such as a carpet or wallpaper. These two sketches may have been made as part of a specific commission for a unified scheme for floors and walls, but are also just as likely to have been kept in the Omega Workshops as part of the communal portfolio of design ideas. On the bottom of the sheet is a small sketch in pencil that shows the working out of the pattern repeat.
