Naldini spent a formative period in Rome between September 1560 and May 1561. He filled a sketchbook with numerous views, including this depiction of the Villa Farnesina. Naldini sketched the location from the opposite bank of the river Tiber, as recorded in the inscription in the lower margin. The red chalk study of legs on the verso shows similarities with figures in Michelangelo’s Last Judgment and The Conversion of Saul, revealing Naldini’s attentive study of this artist’s works in Rome.
