Inscription: As the Art of Painting has its foundation in imitation/ it is necessary [strikethrough] and as it is certain that / positive facsimile imitation is not only / difficult in almost all cases impossible / it is necessary to enquire what kind of imitation is really required. This question may / be easily answered but the degree must / depend on the Painter himself, whether / he seeks the nobler influences of Arts , / whether he appeals to the heart, and to [strikethrough and to] / the [strikethrough] & from his own, to the imaginations / of others or, whether from [strikethrough from] possessed of but humble aspirations of his own [strikethrough of his own] he contents himself / with a closer imitation to satisfy the / eye , and more in accordance with / his limited own views.
