Inscription: Verso: graphite, starting at top left and continuing for full page: As the Art of Painting has its foundation in imitation / it is necessary [last 3 words crossed out] and as it is certain that / positive facsimile imitation is not only / difficult but in almost all cases impossible / it is necessary to enquire what kind of imitation is really required. This question may / be easily answered but the degree must / depend on the Painter himself, whether / he seeks the nobler influences of Art, / whether he appeals to the heart, and to [last 2 words crossed out] / the [last word crossed out] & from his own, to the imaginations / of others or, whether from [last word crossed out] possessed of but humble aspirations of his own [last 3 words crossed out] he contents himself / with a closer imitation to satisfy the / eye , and more in accordance with / his limited own views.
