Harding was best known during his lifetime as the author of influential drawing manuals notable for their focus on landscape, including Lessons on Trees (1850). A prolific draughtsman, twenty-nine of his sketchbooks are held in The Courtauld’s collection. The tree shown here was drawn on a tour of Scotland. Although it appears an accurate record of a specific tree, Harding seems most concerned with its formal qualities, studying the fall of light and shade on the tree’s multiple trunks.
