Inscription: ~Reynolds~ / For the most part I am / disappointed with Reynolds / He was an artist of great / power, but it was that of / the feelings rather than of / Knowledge - To these strong feelings may be ascribed the / courage manifest in his Works / they are daring & dashing not / under the control of the Know / ledge of the individual object / on the true principles & not / such as he worked form / where under art or derived / fancies from the Old Masters - / To his feelings is owing the / beauty of his color.
