Notes
The artist turned the sketchbook around halfway through - the inscription and sketch are therefore upside down. The name 'Mr Cuff' noted here by Harding refers to the artist and engraver Richard Parminter Cuff (1819-1883), who is recorded as living at 7 Owen's Row in the 1851 census. Cuff is listed as 31 years old in the 1851 census, and was active as an artist from around 1842. Given Harding has noted Cuff's name and address from 1851, it seems unlikely that the writing on this page dates from the same period as the entries at the beginning of the sketchbook, which are dated to 1831-33.
This entry may indicate that this whole section of the sketchbook - consisting of inverted graphite sketches - dates to the 1850s, suggesting that Harding picked up an old administrative account/travel book with blank pages to reuse as a sketchbook later in his career.
