The artist turned the sketchbook around halfway through - the verso sketch is therefore upside down.
The corners of the pictorial space delineated by the ruled lines are pin-pricked.An inscription on D.1954.AH.2.67 may indicate that this whole section of the sketchbook - consisting of inverted graphite sketches - dates to the 1850s rather than the 1831-33 date range of the accounts earlier in the sketchbook. This suggests that Harding picked up an old administrative account/travel book with blank pages to reuse as a sketchbook later in his career.
