Harding undertook a tour of northern England shortly after the publication of Lessons on Trees. In this sketch of a stand of trees, he adheres faithfully to his own instructions to amateur draughtsmen: ‘The general roundness of the Tree depends on the Outline being made tender at the top and at the extremities, and becoming gradually darker, and exhibiting the leaves larger, towards the middle and lower parts of the tree…’
