While in the service of Emperor Rudolf II, Savery travelled extensively in the mountains of central Europe, drawing landscapes from nature. The view depicted here has been identified as the Inn valley in the Tyrol. Although Savery represented a real locale, his drawing is closely tied to the tradition of the ‘world landscape’, with its varied topography and multiple viewpoints. The skilful handling of red and black chalk creates an ethereal atmosphere and contributes to the illusion of infinite space.
