Watermark: centre: circle containing fleur-de-lis, topped by small crown (similar to Briquet 7111 though not an exact match - Pérouse, 1544. Peter Bower described it as an Italian-made paper from the mid-17th century, being a variant of Heawood 1632 - Rome, 17th century).

Inscription: Recto: in centre of drawing on drapery, black chalk, very faint: “TEEK[...]” [either from the Dutch word for drawing, tekening or draughtsmanship tekenkunst. Verso: right of centre, black ink: “Aston”; twice, at lower centre and lower left, graphite: “Diepenbeck”; lower left edge, graphite: “Coll Sir John Stirling Maxwell / RW.887”.
