Wilson made a number of drawings like this, in a circular format, using stump rather than line work for modelling, and using a generalised classical imagery rather than showing actual Italian scenes. The drawings appear to be finished works produced for sale, although they seem to have been more popular with fellow artists than with any wider public; two other examples in the Courtauld collections were formerly owned by Nathaniel Hone and Paul Sandby.
