This study of garfishes was done in Portofino in Italy in 1930. The vibrant coloured chalks and lively handling make them look as if newly caught. The artist studied zoology before attending the Slade School of Art, later joining the studio of Walter Sickert. Evidently a keen observer of nature, he took particular interest in plants, especially exotic orchids, which he drew and collected on travels abroad.
