Celebrated as one of the wonders of the ancient world, the Colossus of Rhodes was a gilded sculpture of the sun god Helios constructed in the third century BC. Heemskerck has followed later tradition in mistakenly depicting the vast figure positioned over the entrance to the city’s port. In the foreground, a sculptor crowned with laurels studies a sketch and supervises a team of craftsmen. This drawing was made as a design for a print.
One of Maarten van Heemskerck's last print series, the Wonders of the World encompasses some of the most spectacular human-built structures from antiquity, such as the Pyramids in Egypt and the Colosseum in Rome. Only known from classical texts, the Colossus of Rhodes – a bronze statue of the Greek sun-god Helios – was included because of its reputed monumentality, craftsmanship and beauty.
Though the artist’s drawings were completed in 1570, it took Philips Galle almost two years to engrave the plates and publish the whole set.
