The striking studies of elaborately dressed Roman courtesans by the Scottish artist John Brown must have made a profound impression on his fellow artist Henry Fuseli. The two had become close friends while living in Rome, and probably met again in London shortly before Brown’s untimely death.

Notes

There is a version or copy of this drawing in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art (B1977.14.4230). The recto had long been attributed to Fuseli despite Brown's signature; the discovery in 1950 of de Claussin's etching (of 1809) after it confirmed the attribution to Brown. The verso has been related to Fuseli's painting The Artist in Conversation with Bodmer (Kunsthaus Zurich).

Provenance

William Young Ottley, London (1771-1836); his sale, T. Philipe (London), 6-23 June 1814, 14th day lot 1519; probably purchased there via Watson by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) (10 or 11.6s); his estate sale, Christie's (London), 17 November 1830, lot 103 (with the title 'A Roman lady, seen in a back view, followed by her Duenna'); purchased there by Charles Rogers (10s).; F.R. Meatyard (London); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, n.d. (£4, along with D.1952.RW.644); Witt Bequest 1952
