Label Text

In this dramatic Old Testament scene the prophetess Deborah orders Barach, the commander of the Israelites, to gather his men and fight against the Canaanite armies of Sisera. They had oppressed the Jewish people for twenty years. The prophetess is shown standing underneath the palm tree where she received God’s command to undertake her mission. In this study for a painting now in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, Solimena skilfully applied grey wash to achieve an atmospheric chiaroscuro effect.
