This drawing is one of several studies George Romney executed in preparation for paintings of scenes from Shakespeare plays. It was later sold by a bookseller, Walter T. Spencer (1863–1936), who also dabbled as a dealer of prints and drawings. Spencer would add signatures to drawings to augment their value. It seems Spencer genuinely believed this to be the work of William Blake, and added the false initials at lower right. Other spurious signatures on original drawings in The Courtauld collection can be traced back to Spencer.

Notes

One of a large number of exploratory drawings in preparation for paintings of scenes from Shakespeare plays commissioned by the print publisher John Boydell in 1786 for his Shakespeare Gallery. Our D.1952.RW.2881 is potentially a study for the same figure. This scene was translated into an unfinished painting subsequently destroyed in 1799, but see related sketches in the Fitzwilliam, B.V.135 and B.V.136.

Provenance

Walter Thomas Spencer, London (1863-1936); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), n.d. (as Romney; Witt noted on his index card at the time of purchase 'with forged signature of Blake'); Witt Bequest 1952

Previously suggested to have belonged to William A. Baillie-Grohman, London and Tyrol (1851-1921), but the "WB" inscription is not related to him - they are the forged initials of William Blake, added by Spencer.
