An idyllic scene is framed by two slender trees, a common formal device in the classical tradition of landscape. Moucheron, who worked in Italy as a young man and was inspired both by the landscapes he encountered there and by French artists working around Rome, specialised in painted wall decorations for the interiors of houses. The narrow format of this highly worked drawing suggests that it may have been preparatory for such a painting.
