Provenance

Thomas Woolner (1825-1892); purchased from his heirs? by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b, n.d. (6 shillings); Witt Bequest 1952 Note in the file says Witt purchased this group of Flaxman drawings (D.1952.RW.467, 471 and 473-478) from Woolner; on Modes he was identified as Thomas Woolner, although his death in 1892 would make this a very early purchase for Witt, as we otherwise only have records of him purchasing from the early 1920s. Woolner had two sons, only one of whom survived childhood, named Hugh - could Witt have purchased this drawing from him? A drawing in the BM (1954,0610.16) is listed as belonging to Thomas Woolner’s daughters, and D.2007.DS.41 was purchased from a ‘Mrs Woolner’ by Agnew’s in 1908.
