This design shows an elaborate carved cassone, embellished with grottesco ornament and figures, which are both nude and clothed according to classical tradition. The chest was perhaps intended to be made from walnut, which was used typically for cassoni in the later 16th century. The inscription ‘Pierino’ on the bottom of the sheet was added by a former owner attributing the design to the painter Perino del Vaga who most famously worked with Raphael on the decoration of the Vatican in Rome.

Provenance

William Amhurst Tyssen-Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst of Hackney (1835-1909); by descent to his wife, Margaret Susan Mitford (1835-1919); her estate sale, London, Sotheby's, 14 December 1921; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952) (£1.3); Witt Bequest 1952
