This design was preparatory for the decoration of an ephemeral arch on the Puerto del Sol in Madrid, erected in 1680 to celebrate the marriage of Marie Louise d’Orléans to King Charles II of Spain and subsequently published in a print by Matías de Torres. The popular Spanish subject commemorates the miraculous appearance of Saint James at the Battle of Clavijo about 840, when the army of Ramiro I of Asturias successfully defeated the Moorish troops of Abderraman III, regaining many territories for Christian control.

Provenance

possibly Visconde de Castelruiz; his sale, Christie's (London), 27 - 30 April 1846, lot 278; Sir William Stirling Maxwell, London (1818-1878); by descent to his son, Sir John Stirling Maxwell, Glasgow (1866-1956); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 15 - 16 February 1921, lot 249; presumably purchased there by E. Parsons & Sons (London); their sale, cat. 38, 1921, lot 409 (with D.1952.RW.45); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt (1875-1952) (£2.4, for both); Witt Bequest 1952
