This stern profile of an older man appears to be one of a pair with the portrait of a woman in a turban by the same artist; the sitters were likely a married couple, the inscriptions on both drawings indicating that they were made on the same day. Little is known of the artist, Antonia Lafitte, although she was probably a relation of the better-known Louis Lafitte; the restrained neoclassicism of both artists’ draughtsmanship suggests that she may at least have been his student.
