This unusually small landscape watercolour is a useful reminder of the importance which many patrons attached to size when they were commissioning work from an artist; in many cases this was for the patron as important a consideration as the subject matter. There clearly was a market for very small landscape drawings like this; Dayes' diary of 1798 describes a moonlit scene of Durham in similar dimensions commissioned by a patron for one guinea.
