Watermark: Watermark: centre: Strasburg lily above cursive "W" (must be a Whatman mark, see Churchill 415, but no match found in Churchill or Heawood).

Inscription: Recto: lower left corner (within drawing), brown ink, signed and dated: "MGriffith Jany 9th 1799"; lower centre margin, black ink: "WATER RAIL"; lower right margin, graphite, Witt's hand: "1749 - p. 1809 by Moses Griffith" [the "oses" clearly added later as it is squeezed under the surname].

Collector's mark: Recto: lower left corner in margin, stamped in black: Sir Robert Witt (L.2228b).
