Anthonie Drost, a Dutch animal painter specialising in birds, has made little attempt to bring these creatures or their surroundings to life. Compare, for instance, his toylike frog with Vincent van der Vinne's naturalistic toad, also in the Courtauld's collection (D.1952.RW.3637). From Drost's colourful choice of subjects, especially the ruff and giant dragonfly, and their posed arrangement, it seems probable that this watercolour was a study for a book illustration or a decorative print.
