This bold study of a heavy, barrel-chested horse, formerly attributed to Parmigianino, is currently attributed to Francesco Salviati, an artist who worked in Florence and Rome. The skilful foreshortening suggests that it is a study of a sculpture, possibly a small bronze of a horse and rider known in several versions in the sixteenth century.

Provenance

possibly Nicholas Lanier, London (1588-1666) [his hand tentatively identified on mount inscription]; Sir Peter Lely, London (1618-1680), L.2092; his sale, Sonnius, Lankrink et Thompson (London), 11 - 18 April 1688, lot 29?; presumably acquired there by William Gibson (c. 1644-1703), L.5216; Bolton [individual not yet identified]; given by him to Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), n.d.; Witt Bequest 1952
