Highly finished watercolour drawings by Dusart enjoyed great popularity with collectors. This exquisite example is on smooth vellum, made of calf skin. An extremely durable and precious support, vellum makes colours appear particularly bright and jewel-like. The refinement of the drawing technique contrasts with the coarseness of the subject, which shows a drunken peasant with a large red nose. Such contrasts were certainly appreciated by collectors.
