Rendered in painstakingly fine penwork, this highly finished drawing presents the dramatic episode of the Conversion of Paul in the middle ground of a rolling landscape receding toward a distant coast. A winding path draws the eye into the scene, taking in Paul as he is struck from his horse by a ray of heavenly light. The vast extent of the landscape is underscored by the foreground figures, who appear not to notice the cataclysmic events taking place behind them.
Provenance
