Nicolas de Hoey drew this powerful sculptural figure for a set of prints of Old Testament prophets, published in Antwerp by Philips Galle in 1594. Malachi is shown here with his hand pointing to the sun, an allusion to the coming birth of Christ, the Son of Righteousness. His twisting pose is characteristic of later 16th-century Netherlandish figure drawing. The sheet has been squared for reproduction by the engraver J. Collaert, de Hoey's distinctive colouring and emphatic shading providing valuable tonal information.

This large-scale drawing is one of several by the Dutch artist Nicolas de Hoey depicting prophets from the Old Testament. Though created while the artist was residing in Fontainebleau, France, the composition was eventually engraved by Peter Perret (1555-1637) as part of a series illustrating sixteen prophets. The series was published in Antwerp by Philips Galle (1537-1612) in 1594. The squaring of the paper served to reduce the scale of the composition. The resulting engraving is substantially smaller.
