Label Text

Pujos moved in scholarly circles in Paris and Toulouse, and this unidentified sitter was perhaps a writer, scholar or inventor. Presented in the form of a medallion above a trompe l’oeil plaque inscribed with a laudatory verse, the drawing conforms to the conventions of portrait prints and may well have been destined to be engraved. Pujos’s background as a miniaturist is apparent in his delicate rendering of the man’s features and the folds of his jacket.
