A painter and illustrator, Daniel Maclise was one of the most popular and prolific Victorian artists, admired particularly for his historical and romantic subjects. This finely-wrought pen and ink drawing depicts a scene from Alfred Tennyson’s ‘Idylls of the King’, a cycle of poems set in the time of King Arthur. It shows Enid kissing her husband Geraint as they prepare to ride away from the scene of the Welsh knight’s victory over the wicked Earl Doorm, whose lifeless hand can be seen through the doorway.
