This sheet contains not one landscape but two separate studies of wind-driven objects; note that there are two horizons and that the sails of the windmill and of the boat are facing in opposite directions. There was an enormous increase in paintings and drawings of windmills at the beginning of the nineteenth century; their inclusion in a landscape drew attention to the activity of the air, to the wind and the sky and the relatively new concept of nature as constantly changing. The windmill shown here is probably Randall's mill on the Thames at Nine Elms - alongside it are the two kilns of a cement factory.
