This still life, which may be a copy after a lost original, brings together man-made treasures with natural delights in a statement of calculated luxury. Several of the objects, including the mounted shell and the large frosted silver jar, appear in other works by Roestraten. The success of these paintings may partly have been due to the illusion which they offered their owners. The low viewpoint brings the viewer close to the objects and seems calculated to heighten the impact of the lavish display.
