Label Text

Surrounded by figures representing Fame, History and Charity, Time hoists a medallion containing a faintly sketched male profile. The composition appears to derive from a thesis print designed by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690). Such prints were commissioned by doctoral students to celebrate a successful thesis defence and to honour a powerful patron; Le Brun’s composition depicted Louis XIV. The present artist may have adapted the design for another purpose, perhaps the frontispiece of a book.
