Boucher drew this little spaniel as a study for a tapestry for the royal tapestry works at Beauvais, where, from 1734, he was the principal designer. In the ‘Jouer de flûte’ (one of a set entitled ‘La Noble Pastorale’) the dog dances to music played by a shepherd and shepherdess. In keeping with the romantic setting it is depicted as a lapdog rather than a working sheepdog. Small spaniels were particularly favoured by royalty and the aristocracy at this time.
