Word and image intermingle on this sheet, with Corot’s prominent signature at centre. He may have first signed his name to test the pen, as the ink is messy and uneven. The inscriptions on the left and lower edges inform us that these landscape sketches were executed at the house of Corot’s friend and biographer, Alfred Robaut, ‘after having dined well’, thus documenting a moment in the life of the artist, who felt compelled to doodle while in the company of friends.
