Late in his career Rodin produced hundreds of voluptuous, erotic drawings, such as this intimate close-up. The drawing is daring in both the nature of the pose and the arrangement of the motif diagonally on the sheet. Rodin achieved the carnal effects through the association of bold, energetic lines, with a subtle stumping which evokes the soft flesh. Seeking to capture spontaneity and instantaneity, the artist executed his nude drawings without taking his eyes away from the model.
