The heat of the midday sun prompts shepherd and sheep to seek water and shade, providing a temporarily Arcadian vision of a landscape in which toil and suffering is unknown. Whereas for many painters and poets (and their audiences) rural life was something to be viewed from the comfort of the town, Jacque chose to move, in 1849 (with Jean-François Millet) to Barbizon, a small village on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where he bought a plot of land and reared poultry and grew asparagus. For the most part, however, Barbizon painters shunned pastoral convention and emphasised the hardship of most rural lives.
