Christoph Gertner was court painter to the Duke of Wolfenbüttel in North Germany. This drawing depicts the Judgment of Paris, the Greek myth in which the mortal Paris must give a golden apple, here held by Hermes, to Juno, Venus or Minerva, choosing the most beautiful goddess. Paris is shown prior to the moment of judgment. The gracefully tapering figures, delicate lines and soft washes emphasize the goddesses’ beauty.
