Notes

The settings for this busy Italianate landscapes, are partially imaginary views of Rome, with the Piazza del Popolo here. The monumental Flaminio Obelisk, erected in 1589, dominates the square, and the zodiac signs of Aquarius and Pisces are shown in the sky. On the left stands the church of Santa Maria del Popolo —the church that pilgrims from the North would have encountered first when entering Rome. The square and streets are filled with merrymakers celebrating Carnival, which occurs at this time of the year.
