Notes

The present drawing exhibits a snapshot of everyday life in the Flanders of the time. Two conversing travellers on horseback ride along a forested village street. In the background, in front of an inn, a carriage seems ready to depart. In the lower left corner, a maid fills a bucket with water from a pond. The wooded path is punctuated with smaller groups of children, pigs and poultry. The road itself leads to more buildings and a small village church at the far end. The wide road, populated with figures and animals in the fore and middle grounds, becomes recessively emptier towards the low viewpoint horizon, which enhances the illusion of depth.
