Campagnola, whose reputation rests primarily on his activity as a printmaker, was a skilled and innovative practitioner of woodcut. The heavy lines and emphatic crosshatching suggest that this forest scene, believed to depict the biblical sacrifice of Isaac, is a drawing made by a later follower after one of his woodcuts. Lely was an avid collector of prints as well as drawings, and drawings such as this would probably have held a particular interest for him.
