Watermark: Watermark: centre: large crowned circle containing a lion holding arrows and facing to his right, standing on a platform labelled "VRYHEYT" and around the edge visible "PRO PATRIA" and "LIBERTATE" (no countermark to exactly identify but of a type with Churchill 81-106, dated 1704-1813).
Inscription: Verso: lower right corner, graphite: "By John Collett / lived + died at Chelsea 1780 / He Exhibited at the Society's Rooms Strand 1782 [this date is now hidden under the handling edges and thus inaccessible but is recorded as such in the file - however, this would have been two years after the artist's death]"; right centre edge, graphite: "4890/671". Mount (removed, now in object file): graphite: "John Collett c. 1725-1780 / A study by Collett for his painting "The Rake's Party", / exhibited at Dunthorne Exhibition of English 18th Century / Conversation Pictures, April/May 1936, No. 19. The drawing / differs in detail from the picture which shows it to be a / preparatory study.".
