According to an episode recorded in Saint Luke’s gospel, Saint Peter denied his master three times when he was asked by a female servant about his association with Jesus. This scene from Christ’s Passion is depicted to the left of this striking drawing, whilst the gambling soldiers dominate the foreground. The half-length figures as well as the dramatic contrasts of light and shade demonstrate the impact of Caravaggio (1571-1610), whose works became highly popular in the Netherlands.
