Inscription: Recto: upper left corner, black ink, partly lost in trimming: "[...]+ Dutch Factories Canton / [...] 13.1832."; upper right, black ink: artist's shorthand notes (which according to Conner 2011 are giving instructions, i.e. to paint the flag red, white and blue). Verso: entire sheet, graphite, part of a letter in the artist's hand, hard to read and cut off: "[...] my sketch is not worthy of / but I made it the day before / yesterday, exactly opposite the Door / where I live & it may not be un[...] / to you - the locality may give it an / Interest - Anyone who has been in / Canton will vouch for its fidelity / GC / March. / 15.32".
