In this arrangement of buildings based on memories of Roman architecture - the tower resembles the Castel Sant' Angelo - Piranesi has juxtaposed two aspects of the aftermath of war: the triumph indicated by the procession of banners crossing the bridge, and the destruction signalled by the fire which is not shown, but whose existence is indicated by the smoke-filled sky.
