Notes
Pouncey and Gere, in 1962 in their discussion of the drawing of the 'Arms of Pope Paul III between personifications of the Church and Rome' (British Museum, 1946,0713.452), included D.1952.RW.392 among a group of drawings assigned to 'An Assistant of Perino del Vaga (Luzio Romano?)', along with D.1952.RW.402, 461, 466 and others in Windsor (see the British Museum record, where the attribution to Romano for their sheet has since been confirmed by records of payments to him).
This studio assistant was working long after Perinos' death, as his hand appears on drawings including the devices of Julius III (1550-5) and Pius IV (1559-65), and Romano was also working for the Pope as late as the 1560s so he could be this studio assistant; he was also a specialist in grotesque and ornament, and he trained under Perino.
Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodino in 2001 published this along with D.1952.RW.402, 461 and 466 as originating from Luzio Luzzi's sketchbook.
