Notes

After working as a military surveyor, Sandby was commissioned to produce views of the grounds at Windsor under the employment of the Duke of Cumberland. He used the medium of watercolour expressively, employing swathes of colour often at odds with the graphite sketches beneath, and with particular emphasis on contrasts of light and shade.
