Eugenio Cajés was one of the most versatile and prolific Spanish draughtsmen of the early seventeenth century. Using his distinctive chalk technique, he was able to achieve pictorial effects suitable for preparatory studies for paintings. This compositional study of the Virgin Mary adoring the sleeping Christ Child is closely related to a painting dated 1618 (now in the Prado, Madrid). The understated, tender piety of the scene is typical of the decorous devotional tone of religious art at the Habsburg court in Madrid.
