Notes
This drawing is one of a series of 11 studies, likely designs for engravings, to which D.1952.RW.3817.1-.3 belong, as well as six drawings in the British Museum and two in the Lugt Collection, Paris. No engravings after them are known, and none were incised for transfer, so the project was likely abandoned. The general theme is the illustration of costumes worn by members of different social classes, which correspond to a date in the early 1620s.
Provenance
Sir Thomas Phillips (1792-1872); by descent to his grandson, Thomas Fitzroy Fenwick (1856-1938); purchased from the Fenwick estate by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 1946; given by him to Sir Robert Witt, n.d.; Witt Bequest 1952
