Illuminated from above, Saint Jerome is shown as a hermit in this dramatic chiaroscuro drawing. He is the patron saint of the Hieronymite Order, which was closely identified with the Spanish Habsburg monarchy, as it occupied the royal monastery of El Escorial and the convent of San Jerónimo in Madrid. A court painter since his early career, Vicente Carducho would have had numerous occasions to depict the saint, who, as a penitent in the desert, was prominent in Counter-Reformation imagery.
